is the romney/ryan ticket is not credible on the issue of the war that we are fighting. >> no, they're not. >> we have 68,000 people right now, paul ryan embarrassed himself on afghanistan tonight in a way he embarrassed himself on no other issue. he did not understand the question well enough to know that he was making a mistake because he's just learned this for the test. he doesn't understand any of it. i find it terrifying. >> i think that he absolutely blew it in terms of afghanistan. i think even when he said marines in benghazi, when marines are at embassies. and, i mean, he also bent the truth. he's not at the level of liar as romney. he's a fibber. growing to be a liar. romney's an accomplished liar. but i think that clearly mr. biden gave facts. there was nothing they could refute. and i think he was fiery and to the point. i think ryan held his right wing position. he did not do the chameleon thing that romney did. >> that's true. >> i think it will hurt him in the end and hurt romney in the end and i think when it came especially to foreign affairs, it's good it was in a colleg
in making paul ryan have to do more explaining and in the first hour he did a better job hitting at romney than ryan did hitting at obama. i think ryan, though, was, came across as ernest, knowledgeable and polite, whereas especially in that first hour, joe biden was clearly playing by cable debate rules, which is interrupt and talk over your opponent at will. i think al is right that is going to enthuse democrats. i am not sure how it is going to play with undecided voters. me personally and i am not an undecided veert it came across as off putting, obnoxious and rude and i can guarantee that on the shows tomorrow morning and in the cable discussion going forward, tomorrow and into the weekend the biden smiles and the biden smirks and the biden interruptions will be a juicy topic for discussion. >> rose: mark hall snrin. >> halperin? >> well, i am mostly going to paraphrase what rich lowry just said, there are two things that clearly come out of this, one is the detrimentally base is going to be pleased that they thought, saw the somebody fighting on their behalf and being aggressive on a
and for this ticket which is beyond being rhetorically tougher than this administration, what is it that romney/ryan would do differently on some of these difficult matters? >> i wanted to show mitt romney in richmond today on this whole same subject. >> the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he's doubling down on denial. >> to this day, to this day, we do not have a complete picture. we do not have all the answers. no one in this administration has ever claimed otherwise. >> and that wasn't the only foreign policy issue. another was iran. also afghanistan. interesting partly because of martha raddtz's experience and expertise and talk about winners and losers, the winner of that debate was martha raddtz my friend and colleague at abc but also on iran you have two completely different postures. >> 100%. actually, for -- having said that, that paul ryan was kind of along for the ride i will say for a debate that was, it was supposed to be domestic and foreign policy it was both of those things but a lot of foreign policy. for a guy who has no real
in the first ten minutes last night, that's if you ask me. the romney-ryan pro-growth revolution is very much under way and let's discuss this whole story and the i my all-star cnbc panel and jared bernstein, former chief economist and vice president joe biden. jennifer rubin, author of "the washington post" right turn blog and jamie peth kuke as, let me start with you. my note is a simple one. when he teed off and just accused of administration of mismanagement and i don't know if he used the word cover up and he said you guys have done everything wrong, to me, that hot topic which is increasingly important in this presidential race, that blew biden up, and that gave the win to ryan who held on for the rest of the hour. what about benghazi and what about biden's lies and falsehoods about benghazi last night? >> joe biden at least got the story in the front page of the new york times who had been burying the story and that's something and i think you're right and that will be a big problem for the obama ticket going forward. the president will have to do clean-up work on tuesday at a time tha
? they first blamed the youtube video, and now they are trying to blame the romney ryan ticket for making this ran issue. we agreed with hed with the obama administration with regard to iraq. the vice president was put in charge of those negotiations by president obama, and he failed to get the agreement. ween don't have [ inaudible ] agreement because they failed to get one. that's what we are talking about. and when it comes to our veterans we owe them a great deal of gratitude for what they have done for us. including your son, bo. >> biden: thank you. >> ryan: but we want to make sure we don't lose the things we fought so hard to get. we agree with the 2014 transition but we also want to make sure we are not projecting weakness abroad. this benghazi issue would be a tragedy in and of itself but unfortunately it's indicative of a broader problem, and that's the unravelling of the obama foreign policy which is making the world more chaotic and us less safe. >> governor romney talked about the weakness -- talked about apologies from the obama administration. was tha
night he exposed extreme risk that romney ryan economics would pose for the middle class. he pressed congressman ryan to reassure the middle class their taxes wouldn't go up if they passed that $5 trillion tax cut for wealthiest americans. and he couldn't do it. congressman ryan when pressed about his defense spending proposal flat-out lied about it. the fact they proposed a $2 trillion increase in defense spending beyond the level the pentagon asked for which would explode the deficit. and he wouldn't commit to the 2014 timetable to bring our troops home from afghanistan. and so i think time and time again the vice president laid out the choice for the middle class in this election and was very effective in doing so. jon: time and time again the vice president interrupted, interjected, laughed, guf fawed, that kind of thing. was that appropriate first of all? was it intentional? >> well, republicans like to praise happy warriors. that is what we saw from the vice president last night. he caught out the brazen attempt by the romney-ryan campaign to try to rewrite their kick the -- ti

. in a little bit mitt romney teams up with congressman paul ryan in the swing state of ohio. and you're going to see their rally live right here in "the situation room." already today romney's called his running mate's debate performance thoughtful respectful, steady and poised. our national political correspondent jim acosta has more now on the republican's post debate spin. >> reporter: wolf, even though paul ryan said he saw it coming republican strategists i talk to in the post debate spin room said they were not expecting joe biden's repeated interruptions and laugh out lud style. if the vice president's performance could be summed up as lol, the republican response was omg. >> i'm great. >> reporter: at breakfast after his fiery debate with vice president joe biden, paul ryan still had his sunny side up. >> no. it's what i expected. is to drive a wedge in between paul ryan and governor romney, to get in between the policy positions so that, essentially, they're setting up vice-president biden would be setting up his boss before the next debate. in other words, to put governor romney back on his heels before that town hall debate in new york. >> one of the dynamics we will be watching is the considerable age difference, between the two men, about 30 years. we talked about how when vice-president biden had already gotten married and graduated from college and finished law school, that's when paul ryan was born. so we will see how age and the difference plays in this debate tonight, as we watch things about to get underway, here in danville. >> reporter: good evening and welcome to the first and only vice-presidential debate of 2012. sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. i'm martha raddatz of abc news. i am honored to moderate this debate between two men who have dedicated much of their lives to public service. tonight's debate is divided between domestic and foreign policy issues. i am going to move back an

the information that is available from the romney/ryan campaign it is not possible to cut tax rates as much as you'd like without eliminating deductions that may hurt the middle cla. specifically, you can't do this without changing rules on capital gains taxes, dividend taxes and the romney campaign has said they will not do that. you cannot cut taxes and keep the middle class deductions and can't cut taxes and keep lower rates on capital gains. now the romney campaign has said, look, we would work with the congress. we would -- we can't tell you what exactly it would look like because we'll work with the congress but the tax policy center says it can't be done. given what we know, it can't be done. the second claim, let's talk about the auto bailout, fight begun this on the campaign trail. vice president biden made the case that romney would let detroit go bankrupt. listen. >> we knew we had to act for the middle class. we immediately went out and rescued general motors. we went ahead and made sure that we cut taxes for the middle class, and in addition to that, when that occurred what, did romne

romney the opposite. the last thing we need now is another war. >> congressman ryan. >> ryan: we mourn the loss of these four americans who were murdered. when you take a look at what has happened just in the last few weeks. they sent the un ambassador out to say this was just of a protest and youtube video. it took the president two weeks to acknowledge that this was a terrorist attack. he went to the un and he said six times he talked about the youtube video. look, if we are hit by terrorists, we are going to call it for what it is, a terrorist attack. our ambassador in paris has a marine detachment guarding him. shouldn't we have a marine detachment guarding our ambassador in benghazi? they first blamed the youtube video, and now they are trying to blame the romney ryan ticket for making this ran issue. we agreed with hed with the obama administration with regard to iraq. the vice president was put in charge of those negotiations by president obama, and he failed to get the agreement. ween don't have [ inaudible ] agreement because they failed to get one. that'
